The definition of peace mostly reads: tranquil, quiet, free from disturbances. But is that it? How do you remain in that undisturbed tranquil state? Someone wrote of peace, “that you have to allow yourself to be at peace.” I like that. The things we often face do not allow for peace, but we will sometimes have to take our peace back from the circumstances. Refusing to surrender it. God will give the strength we need through His Word and Spirit to be victorious.
Jesus knowing that situations we face would compete for our peace made this promise:
“I’m telling you these things while I’m still living with you. The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at My request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. I’m leaving you well and whole. That’s My parting gift to you. Peace. I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left—feeling abandoned, bereft. So don’t be upset. Don’t be distraught.”John 14:25-27 MSG
The things Jesus was sharing in preparation for His departure weren't easy to accept. Though good, losing someone who you’ve spent every waking and sleeping moment with for three years wasn’t going to be easy. They could depend on Him being there no matter what. The concept of not having Him physically around was very daunting at best. The promise of the Holy Spirit I’m sure didn’t register at the moment. It’s one of those moments where you’re hearing but not really listening. Too many thoughts are running through your mind. We can identify with them. When we’re facing heartbreak, separation or loss, we’re hearing the well meant words of friends and loved ones, but it’s all a blur. Lips without sound.
Jesus is offering us a superior peace. A peace that isn’t moved by what we face. This peace doesn’t deny the circumstances but it holds securely to a Person. It’s not controlled by the circumstances but rather the circumstances are subject to Him. That’s why we must keep our mind stayed on Him no matter what. He gives us peace, we have to choose to take it. Jesus spoke peace to the storm-we have to do the same. Give yourself the right to stay in peace. If it was given to us, then the only way we’ll lose it is by giving it away.
To what or whom have you surrendered your peace? Take it back! Jesus gave you His peace. Not the world’s peace that is controlled by our circumstances being perfect, but the peace that sleeps through a hurricane. When you receive that negative report, keep your peace! When you can’t see your way out, keep your peace! When there are more bills than finances, keep your peace! Keep your mind on Him, keep your eyes on Him. He’s with us no matter what. Don’t let the world tell you how to respond, let them say you’re living in denial, no, you’re keeping your peace. Only when you’re in peace, will you hear Him speak. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I’ve been given a strategy when I remained in peace. But I can also tell you of the sleepless nights and tormented days when I have given away my peace. The former is better. His promise endures through the storm.
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You , all whose thoughts are fixed on You!” Isaiah 26:3 NLT
Brian Simmons writes of God’s peace in this way;
“Listen to Me and peace will be your pillow on which to rest your anxious thoughts. Yield your endlessly running thoughts to My sovereignty. Be okay with letting go and experiencing what it’s like to trust Me unreservedly. Peace is much deeper than your mindful understanding. It often contradicts what makes sense, but I want you to become comfortable with allowing yourself to be at peace during trials. It doesn’t feel natural to walk in peace when circumstances are screaming in your face, but this is the life of one who is fully confident in My love and goodness.”
Easier said than done you say? Well when the Prince of Peace becomes your peace it may not be easy but it’s done. It’s putting into practice what we say we believe. The Lord will always allow the scenarios that will grow our faith walk with Him. We can cooperate with Him and enjoy that tranquil state of rest or we can give in to the terrorizing of our minds. Just get closer to Him when the storms of life are howling its threats. You know how kids hide behind their parents when they’re afraid? We get to do the same under the shadow of His wings. The Bible says we not only hide but rejoice. Why? He’s stepped up to protect and defend us. Here are two verses to keep you peaceful.
“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to You for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of Your wings until the danger passes by.”
Psalms 57:1 NLT
“Because You are my Helper , I sing for joy in the shadow of Your wings. I cling to You; Your strong right hand holds me securely.” Psalms 63:7-8 NLT
PEACE…His peace…rest securely in Him
