The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: “ Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.
I’m dating myself. But do some of you remember the television show The Fugitive? That man was constantly on the run. He had no home, no rest and definitely no lasting friendships. You can’t have a stable relationship if you’re always on the run. Yet most people are living life like the fugitive, trying to run from God who is EVERYWHERE!! Lol
Jonah was such a man. Because of his hatred for the Ninevites he didn’t want to see them delivered. You see the Ninevites were pagans and militarily ruthless towards other nations. Yet our Merciful God loved them, and wanted to give them an opportunity to repent so His judgement would be abated. Has God ever sent you to minister or apologize to someone you didn’t particularly care for? (My hands are up). Especially if you think you’re right and they’re not? The saying to err is human, to forgive divine, is true here; because it required divine intervention, which God supplied, to do what Jonah was assigned to do.
We all make mistakes, but when we feel we have been wronged; well, that’s a whole different kettle of fish. Jonah wanted judgment for Nineveh, not deliverance. And rightfully so! Those folks were merciless in their treatment of others. But God is rich in mercy because of His great love for us. Eph. 2:4
So getting back to the question. How do you run from God who’s everywhere? You can’t! Please read the book of Jonah it’s only 4 chapters. You’ll find yourself throughout if you’ll be honest. We’ve all tried it at one point or another; running in the opposite direction of God’s call. How did that work out or is working out for you? From personal experience, let me offer you a word of advice. WAVE THE WHITE FLAG of surrender! He always wins! Lol
How do I know He always wins you ask? Let’s read. Jonah obeyed the Lord. 😂Chapter 3:3. I’m telling you! Wave the white flag! Whatever He’s asking or telling you to do, just do it! I’m hearing Him sing again. “ You cannot hide from God His eyes are watching you “ I tell you He loves to sing😊 my brothers and sisters, if you’re running from a call to salvation, or a call to share your salvation experience, or sent to warn others of impending judgment just be obedient. God always gets His way. Just ask Jonah. Or ask me lol I’ve tried the running or pretending I didn’t hear; it doesn’t work!! Obey God, and leave the consequences to Him. He always pays for what He orders. Your responsibility is simply to obey.
Don’t wait to be swallowed up by life; don’t wait until you’re flat out on your back. Don’t wait until you lose your job, your health, your family or your resources. Just say speak Lord, your servant is listening. To obey is better than sacrifice. 1 Samuel 15:22
Father in the Name of Jesus, I come acknowledging like Jonah that I’m a runner. I no longer want to be a fugitive but desire to walk in obedience to your will. Forgive me where I’ve failed to obey and give me another opportunity to get it right like you did with Jonah. Thank you for your mercy and grace, and for restoring lost years away from you. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen
Don’t run from God, run towards Him🙏
